As part of a larger initiative to plant 90,000 trees in Ghana, Divine Chocolate is teaming up with Grow Ahead to plant 10,000 trees with Kuapa Kokoo, the world’s largest Fairtrade cocoa cooperative and co-owners of Divine. The goal of this agroforestry project is to reforest cocoa farms and farmlands to create microclimates, reducing the impact of climate change on cocoa farmers and the cocoa industry.
Did you know?
- 70% of the world’s cocoa supply comes from West Africa, but climate change is significantly impacting this delicate crop.
- Cocoa needs to grow in shade to be protected from sun and weather.
- Natural forest cover in Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire has declined by more than 70% in the past three decades.*
Divine will match up to $5,000 in donations with the goal of raising $10,000 to plant 10,000 trees.
*Cocoa Barometer 2020
Your donations will contribute to an ongoing effort to raise funds for Kuapa Kokoo’s reforestation project in Ghana.
What are the total goals of the reforestation project?
- Plant 90,000 trees on 14,754 acres.
- This program will benefit 2,075 farmers and 8,300 people in farmer communities
Planting cocoa in agroforestry or food-forest systems has a wide range of benefits from conserving biodiversity, strengthening soil health, microclimatic control, carbon sequestration, pest control, generating income for farmers through organic and Fairtrade product sales, and enhancing climate resiliency.
Farmers and rural communities are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change despite contributing significantly less to global emissions. Supporting farmer-led climate resiliency initiatives is essential so that they can protect the land and their community and continue to provide for their families. The Agroforestry and Cocoa in Ghana project will work with 2,075 farmers across 25 communities in the Offinso municipality of Ghana. The project will raise and distribute 75,000 timber tree species and 15,000 fruits trees, reforesting 14,754 acres over the two-year period of the project.
What will the budget cover?
Tree planting is about more than just trees. This budget covers technical assistance for the management and implementation of the project, production and installation of coffee seedlings, production and installation of forest seedlings, installation of nurseries and the cost of conservation by the Women's Committee of Pangoa.
Does $1 really equal 1 tree?
$1 includes the cost of growing a tree at a nursery, transportation, material, ongoing maintenance, and operating costs (as outlined above).
